BARBARA HORAN, OWNER

Greenville native Barbara Horan made her dream of resurrecting and renovating the historic Texan Theater a reality. She purchased the building in 2010 and immediately began the painstaking process of turning a vacant, long dormant venue into a showpiece for downtown Greenville.

The Texan Theater, which dates back to the late 1800’s as the King Opera House and had been dark since 1975, is now a fabulously versatile entertainment jewel that can host movie screenings, theater productions, live music, and private functions. Horan bought the adjacent building extending the Texan Theater lobby into a sterling coffee shop that serves cups of java, tasty lunch specialties and sweet delights to downtown workers and guests.

Fresh also means eco-friendly: The Texan takes pride in using solar panels to augment use of electricity from the grid. In every place possible reduce, reuse, recycle is implemented.

Here at the Texan, nouveau mingles with vintage. Horan preserved posters, catwalks, bathrooms, the lobby terrazzo floor, the striking neon blade, and the marquee. Materials from the demolition were used in the construction.

Speaking of ceilings, the stunning new Texan Theater ceiling consists of a series of hand painted panels, one depicting the state seal of the Texas and the other the state of Texas starred with Greenville’s location. Each panel was painted on canvas by Chris Arnold of Eyecon in Dallas. The canvas panels were then glued onto the ceiling.

Jim Besgrove of KBA Design in Dallas oversaw the project, from taking in Horan’s vision to supervising the installation. The entire ceiling project took nine months from conception to installation.

The gorgeous, state-of-the-art theater seats 78 with Covid spacing, so the intimacy is palpable. Texan Theater guests will enjoy a full, four-course meal, excellent service to your table, parking just a few steps from the venue, gratuity included in your ticket price, and a meet-and-greet with the performers whenever possible. That’s the Texan Theater VIP treatment for all ticket buyers.

Horan has managed to bring a little bit of Austin or Broadway to downtown Greenville. The Texan Theater Greenville is alive again, an elegant reminder of the past refashioned for the future.
